AxeDesign guide

Learn system design by building it: drag infrastructure pieces onto a canvas, wire them together, and get graded against reference architectures. Open Axe Design →

Getting started

Sign in with Google

Open Axe Design and press the Google sign-in button — exactly like Tasker and DSA. Login is verified once by Axe Home, and the same session then works on every suite app, so if you are already signed in elsewhere you skip this entirely. The app is experimental, so expect new systems and tweaks often.

Pick a blueprint

The home screen shows every published system with its difficulty, category and estimated time. Cards you have finished show a green score badge — replay them anytime to beat your best.

Read the brief first

Each system opens with a brief: what to build, functional requirements, constraints (latency, availability) and scale numbers. The Brief tab also lists exactly which component types and links the checker wants.

Playing: palette, canvas, connect

Add components

Click + on any palette item, or drag it straight onto the canvas. Two starter nodes are already placed for you. There are 18 types: clients, DNS, CDN, load balancers, API gateways, app services, caches, queues, databases, storage, search and more.

Move nodes

Drag any node to reposition it. Positions don't affect your score — only component types and connections matter.

Connect two nodes

Every node has an input dot on its left edge and an output dot on its right. Drag from an output dot and release on another node's glowing input to wire them — a curved wire follows your cursor while you drag, just like n8n. Hover any wire for a quick-delete button, or select it and press Del. Esc cancels a wire in progress.

Tip: Think in flows, not boxes: client → entry (LB/gateway) → compute → state. Reads want caches and CDNs; writes want queues and durable stores.

Scoring & submitting

Check your design

Press Check design anytime. Grading runs on the server: 50% for having every required component type, 50% for every required connection. You need 70%+ to pass. Missing pieces are listed under the canvas.

Use hints & reference

Stuck? The Hints tab gives nudges. After two attempts the annotated Reference architecture unlocks — study it, then reproduce the shape yourself.

Submit for credit

Once a check passes, press Submit to record the completion. Only passing designs count toward streaks and XP. Extra components are never penalised.

Streaks, XP & levels

Same engine as DSA, tuned for architecture: complete at least one system per day to grow your flame. First completion of a system earns 100 XP plus half your score; replays earn a small credit and still raise your best score and attempt count. Every 500 XP is a new level, and yesterday counts as a grace day.

Tip: One system a day keeps the streak alive — the URL Shortener takes ~20 minutes and is the perfect warm-up.

The five systems

URL Shortener (beginner) — hashing, cache-aside reads, TinyURL flow. Realtime Chat (intermediate) — websockets, queue fanout, presence. Photo Feed (intermediate) — CDN media, async fanout, precomputed timelines. Ride Hailing (advanced) — geo indexes, location streams, matching. Video Streaming (advanced) — transcode pipelines, adaptive bitrate, origin shielding. New systems are curated in axeAdmin and appear automatically.

FAQ

Does node placement matter? No — only types and directed connections are graded.

Can I see the answer? Yes — the reference unlocks after two checks, or instantly once you pass.

Why “experimental”? Scoring weights, XP values and the catalogue are still being tuned. Your completions and streaks are real and will carry over.
